For the past six years, Mark Holterman, MD, has served as a professor of surgery and pediatrics at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. Throughout his career as an educator and clinician, Dr. Mark Holterman has been an active participant in professional organizations including the American College of Surgeons, of which he is a fellow.

Last August, the American College of Surgeons (ACS) rolled out a new reference book aimed at helping surgeons establish and/or improve quality control procedures at their institutions. Optimal Resources for Surgical Quality and Safety represents the work of some 135 authors. ACS hopes that the manual will lead not only to improved patient care in surgical settings but also to more young surgeons becoming leaders in the quality control sector.
