APSA Issues Statement of Support for MOC Practices

Mark Holterman

Possessing 30 years of experience in the specialty of pediatric surgery, Dr. Mark Holterman serves patients at both the Children’s Hospital of Illinois and Advocate Christ Children’s Hospital. Engaged in his profession outside out his daily work, Mark Holterman, MD, is a member of the American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA).

The APSA recently issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) process that governs the ongoing education of physicians and makes sure that they stay abreast of new trends and techniques as part of their board certification requirements. These requirements are vital in ensuring that pediatric surgeons continue to provide quality and safe care to patients.
The organization is also opposed to any legislation that would seek to inhibit or abolish MOC requirements, as it would infringe upon the right of physician groups to establish standards for certifications within their own ranks. Abolishing MOC would also hurt patients, as it would take away a powerful tool – knowing whether their doctors are board certified and up-to-date with the latest information in their field.
