A professor of medicine serving the University of Illinois, Mark Holterman, MD, is an experienced pediatric surgeon who also sits on the board of TargaCell, LLC, an innovative biotech company that develops stem cell delivery techniques. Beyond his professional duties, Dr. Mark Holterman is associated with International Pediatric Surgical Alliance for the Children of Vietnam (IPSAC-VN), which operates a scholarship program with the aim of improving pediatric health care in Vietnam.

To qualify for the program, a scholar must have a strong grasp of the English language and a letter from a Vietnamese educational institution that confirms the scholar’s dedication to improving the health care situation in Vietnam. Upon completion of the program, scholars receive a certificate, which is not applicable to United States residency or fellowship programs. Further, recipients must make presentations based on what they learned during the program and how they will use this knowledge to improve the health care situation in Vietnam.
The total scholarship amounts to $2,500, which goes toward the travel and living expenses the scholar incurs during his or her one- or two-month study trip to the United States.
